“…we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender” – Winston Churchill
Speaking is a miracle. Hearing is a miracle. By the humble means of our built in tools for speech we’re able to communicate. We share not only the mundane details of necessity and daily functions of life but also of great and deep thoughts, strategies, warnings, even love. The extraodinary human voice makes this happen.
Life’s a Stage
Historically great orators spoke in amphitheatres, great open areas engineered by the clever ancient Greeks, designed to carry sound to as many listeners as possible without the aid of amplification or speaker cabinets. It is truely impressive that the ancients learned about sound and how it travels without the tools we have today.
Today, with the aid of electronics, and our modern day clever people, we build badly designed theaters. Often these buildings are nothing more than large boxes that fit a lot of people. As a result, we too communicate, educate and entertain. Microphones, cameras and speakers, using protocols of VOIP and the like, enable global communication. The ancient Greeks had myths that speak to the ancient human dreams of flying. We do that now. The ancient Greeks embraced and made central to their culture the art of public speech. They were able to speek to maybe a 1000 people at a time. But each of us can do that now, without an amphitheatre. Indeed, now, thanks to social media, YOU personally can be heard by 10’s of 1000’s or even millions. Hopefully, you go viral for something your proud of…
