Model J7H-Dual uses the double earplugs. The CEP earplugs have earphone drivers in them so you don’t miss communications. These products come standard with Comply foam ear tips that get soft at body temperature and are third party certified to block 29dB of outside noise. WESTONE ORDERING GUIDELINES

Follow these steps for the most efficient ordering process through the Westone MILITARY DEPT for Custom Earpieces:

      1. Have the impressions made. Looking for an audiologist near you? Westone can help, click here to search.
      2. Identify and place the pair of impressions in zip lock bags/box for each person.
      3. Fill out the modifiable PDF CEP Order Form, email to military@westone.com and include in box with impressions (see attachment).
      4. Provide Your Westone Account Number (Leave blank if unknown)
        a.  Point of Contact: Name, phone number, and email
        b.  Members Name
        c.  Earpiece Style – select from drop-down, for J2-Dual select CEP 508-C15 half shell or full shell. Half shell is 21dB NRR, Full Shell is 28dB. These ratings are estimated based on similarly tested styles.

This is the starting point. Everyone knows this basic headset. So how do you improve it?

Dalcomm adds better frequency response earphone and microphone. You know how the standard model makes you sound like a subway station announcer, all muffled and tinny? That’s actually on purpose. Military headset folks came to the conclusion that they could cancel out all the frequencies except the mid range of human voice from 300Hz to 5kHz and block noise that way. True, it works to a certain extent but sounds quite unpleasant. We open that window up a bit to 8kHz. The noise cancelling feature is still there but it’s so much easier and pleasant to listen to.

The ear seal is the largest portion of the headset that actually makes contact with you. Why be stuck with what the manufacturer decides is most comfortable? We give you the choice.

Model J7 Pilot’s Headset – Communicate on a Higher Plane

Model J7 GAPilot’s Headset? What kind of pilot, airplane, helicopter, glider, airboat operator? Ok, that’s operator not a pilot, but it’s still loud and our headset still works there. How? Model J7 Pilot’s headset takes the Model J7 Series one step further by adding the versatility of a changeable cable. You can plug into whatever kind of aircraft or craft you fancy. One headset to work with them all.

Better still? Yes. Adapter SBG-4 with a 3.5mm plug and SBJ-USB-PTT allows use with simulators, computer simulators, smartphones and more. SBJ-USB-PTT has a configurable output for the PTT button just tell us what you want it to do.

Better even still? Yes. You can choose what ear seals you’d like. In a super rugged outdoor setting you may prefer simple foam seals. In a more comfortable cockpit you might prefer the luxurious protein leather seals. Or perhaps you prefer the memory foam/gel plush ear seals. You have options.

The J1 Pilot’s headset has an interchangeable cable, meaning that you can use a fixed wing general aviation dual plugs adapter or a U-174/U Helicopter plug adapter. Better than that, we have options for USB and 3.5mm meaning you can use it for training, video conferencing or even just mowing the lawn.

The Lamborghini of Headsets

What makes it miraculous?

Carbon fiber is, as Popular Mechanics says, “The Miracle Material”. No doubt you’ve seen many high end applications like the exceptionally expensive Lamborghini and other masterpiece concept cars. Carbon fiber has a number of impressive physical properties. It’s not just about its brilliant luster like the gemstone tiger’s eye, Boeing airliners are made with the stuff. In fact, carbon fiber turns out to be stronger than steel. It’s a whole lot lighter too.  Other properties include resistance to fatigue and corrosion, non-toxicity to humans, a low coefficient of thermal expansion (it doesn’t expand as much as other things when it gets hot), it’s X-ray permeable and not flammable.

Why not use magnesium? Looking at a magnesium flame will cause permanent damage to your vision.  In the event one’s aircraft was downed, if one was careful to look away while lighting such a headset on fire, it may be possible to use the headset as a flare. However, there exists no such possibility with a carbon fiber headset. It would have to suffice for one to look fashionable, with comfortably warm ears, while being rescued.

What about other ‘metal alloys’? Metal alloys are not bad. However, ‘metal alloys’ is a category and includes cheap waste metal mixes that are lightweight but very poor quality.

Why do we use carbon fiber in headsets? 

The circum-aural headset is a headset with a cup around the ear. It was first made to solve the problem of communicating in a noisy environment. It also works out well for protecting your hearing. The original headsets issued to military and industrial uses were steel and plastic. That’s because the form of the headset followed it’s function. The headsets held up well but weren’t necessarily that comfortable or light. In fact, it is possible to still buy older brand headsets that continue to be made of steel and plastic and are still made in exactly the same form they were made in since the 1970’s.

Of course, the market is flooded with headsets just like them because, as the colloquial expression goes: ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Many have concluded that form must be considered. This is not only because they don’t like certain colors, and maybe prefer black for example, but also because they’re not on the front lines they’re just mowing their lawn and therefore care what they look like. As as result, there are lots of great looking lightweight options out there too.

The real thing?

There are headsets that look like they are made of carbon fiber but they are not in fact made of carbon fiber. Some use a process called hydrodipping to apply the image of carbon fiber. Some print it on by other means. Either way, such headsets pass off vastly inferior construction at nearly the same costs as the real thing. But, how can you tell the difference? Pick it up in your hands. A true carbon fiber headset is nearly half the weight of a traditional military headset. If you’ve been in the military or flown a plane with really old headsets in it and had to wear one of them for many hours you’ll know what an important difference the headset’s weight makes.
